THE BINATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The Binational Independent Film Festival is here again, this year with even more movies and an excellent repertoire of talent from both the United States and Mexico. As in past years we are here to strengthen the bond between the United States and Mexico, through film. As the main course, we have three pillars of cinema in both the U.S. and Mexico receiving the lifetime achievement award: Director and Writer John Sayles, independent-film Producer Maggie Renzi, and award-winning actor Pedro Armendariz Jr.

John Sayles is the most prominent independent filmmakers of our time, with such films as Men with Guns, Passion Fish, Limbo, Matewan, and Lonestar. He has been completely independent for over thirty years. His creative, and life partner Maggie Renzi, has been with him for the same amount of time, completing the creative circle as producer of all of Mr. Sayles’s films. Together they have kept independent cinema alive, exactly matching the spirit that has propelled this festival for seven years. Pedro Armendariz Jr. has achieved everything he has wanted in film, theater, and television. ÊHe has acted in over a hundred films including, The Return of the Magnificent Seven, Matando Cabos, Before Night Falls, El Crimen del Padre Amaro and La Ley de Herodes, just to name a few. He is an Ariel winner, not to mention the countless other awards he has won not only for film, but for theatre and television, as well.

This years wonderful cast of actors, directors, producers, and writers includes: Mexican actor, Damian Alcazar, from the films La Ley de Herodes and Men with Guns, Mexican director Alejandro Springall, director of the film Santitos, he is bringing his newest film Morirse Esta en Hebreo, which we will premiere at the festival on January fifth as our opening ceremony. We will also be having filmmaker Andreas Olavarria, and actor/writer James Russo, who has starred in movies such as Donnie Brasco, and Open Range, and last, but not least, stage and film actress Veronica Merchant.

As for the films: the Festival is bringing to you a wide variety of films from the United States, Mexico, India, the Dominican Republic, and Argentina. In El Paso, we are premiering John Sayles latest film, Honeydripper, but throughout the week we have such fare as: an animated comedy, The Chosen One, Alejandro Springall’s new film, Morirse Esta en Hebreo, a film from the Dominican Republic about the differences between the rich and the poor, Yuniol, we will have a film from India, Hope and a little Sugar, a film about life after 9/11, and a film from Argentina, Palermo Hollywood, an action movie about life in the slums of Argentina. In addition, we are bringing the films, Mas que a Nada en el Mundo, and Partes Usadas, among others.

But that’s not all: we also have the competition of shorts, documentaries, and screenplays, with entries from all over the world. We already know that this years festival will be one of our best, not only in films, talent, content, but we will also be having more talks with the celebrities, and are now showing films at Cinemark Cielo Vista, at 1 P.M. every day, and on the other side of the border, we are now not only at El Cinito in Juarez, but also at the brand new Centro Cultural Paso del Norte as well. Juarez, Chihuahua y El Paso, Texas

El Festival Binacional de Cine Independiente esta aquí de nuevo, este año con mas películas y en excelente repertorio de talento tanto de México como de los Estados Unidos. Como en años pasados estamos aquí para reforzar la unión entre nuestros dos paises, por medio del cine. Este año tendremos mas seminarios y presentaciones de películas. Adicionalmente tendremos tres pilares del cine tanto en México como en los Estados Unidos, del lado Mexicano tenemos al excelente actor Pedro Armendariz Jr., y del lado Americano al Director y Escritor John Sayles, y la productora Maggien Renzi.

Pedro Armendariz Jr. ha conseguido hacer todo lo que se ha propuesto tanto en cine como en teatro y televisión. Ha actuado en mas de Cien peliculas incluyendo, The Return of the Magnificent Seven, Matando Cabos, El Crimen del Padre Amaro, La Ley de Herodes y When Night Falls. Es ganador del Ariel, y también se ha ganado todo lo que se puede ganar un Actor en teatro y televisión, pero no solo eso sino también el cariño del público que tanto lo quiere. John Sayles es el director independiente mas prominente de Estados Unidos de los últimos veinte años. Su socio creativo, y socio de por vida Maggie Renzi ha estado a su lado por todo este tiempo. Ella ha producido todas las peliculas del Sr. Sayles, y también produjo la famosa pelicula independiente Girl Fight. Juntos han mantenido el cine independiente con vida, que es exactamente lo que el festival ha estado haciendo por ya ocho años.

Estamos trayendo un elenco de actores, directores, productores y escritores de maravilla. Empezando por el actor mas laureado de México: Damián Alcázar (La Ley de Herodes y Hombres Armados), el director Alejandro Springall (Santitos), y tendremos la premiere en Juárez de su nueva pelicula Morirse Esta en Hebreo. Del lado Americano el actor y director James Russo (Donnie Brasco, Open Range, The Most Dangerous Game), productor y director Jeff Scheftel (TV Junkie, The Sounds of Memphis y Welcome to Deathrow), y productor y ejecutivo de adquisiciones para Twentieth Century Fox Andreas Olavarr’a, con su nueva película de animación para adultos The Chosen One.

En cuanto a las peliculas, lo mas importante, estamos trayendo una variedad y una calidad fuera de serie, con peliculas de México, Los Estados Unidos, India, La República Dominicana, y Argentina. Vamos a abrir con la premiere de la pelicula Morirse Esta en Hebreo de Alejandro Springall (5 de Enero), y vamos a cerrar la premiere de Honeydripper de John Sayles y Maggie Renzi (12 de Enero). Adicionalmente traemos documentales y peliculas con temas muy, pero muy relevantes para la frontera: La Balada de Ezequiel Hernandez, Partes Usadas y Padre Nuestro, para hacer un total de 15 peliculas para este año.

Para finalizar, como todos los años tenemos nuestra esperada sección de competencias de Estudiantes y Profesionales de Cortos, Documentales y libretos de Cortos. Y como siempre tanto en Inglés como en Español. Estamos adhiriendo, con mucho orgullo y esfuerzo las presentaciones de películas en los Cinemark Cielo Vista a la 1PM todos los dias, y las presentaciones de documentales y pel’culas en el flamante Centro Cultural Paso del Norte. Y como en años anteriores nuestras sedes El Cinito en Juárez y el Cinema Union de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso. Esperamos verlos por acá de nuevo y adherir nuevos cinéfilos, o personas que solo quieran disfrutar de buen cine, pues siempre ha sido nuestro interés promover el cine independiente y darnos una razón mas para disfrutar nuestra zona fronteriza.
